Weighted course grade calculator
Teachers almost never grade a class as a simple mean of every assignment. Usually homework, quizzes, midterms, and the final each carry a different share of the total. This calculator implements the standard weighted-mean formula so you can estimate your course average before the registrar does—and it pairs naturally with a full GPA calculator when you want credit-weighted GPA across classes.

Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate a weighted grade?
- Multiply each category’s percentage score by its weight, add those products together, then divide by the sum of the weights. Example: (88×20 + 92×30 + 85×50) ÷ (20+30+50) = weighted average %. This matches how most course syllabi combine homework, midterms, and finals.
- Do my weights have to add up to 100?
- No. Any positive weights work because the formula divides by the total weight—you get the same result from weights 20, 30, 50 as from 2, 3, 5. Many syllabi use percentages that sum to 100 for clarity, but it is not required for the math.
- Can I enter extra credit (score over 100)?
- Yes. If your instructor allows scores above 100% on an item, enter the actual percentage. The weighted average can exceed 100 in rare cases; treat letter-grade bands as approximate.
- What is the difference between weighted average and GPA?
- This tool works in course percentage points (0–100) with weights you define. GPA is usually credit-hour weighted grade points on a 4.0 scale across courses. Use Toolsle’s GPA calculator for semester or cumulative GPA; use this tool for one class’s weighted components.
- Why doesn’t my letter grade match Canvas or my professor’s portal?
- Letter cutoffs, rounding (whole vs half percent), dropped assignments, and curves differ by school and instructor. This page uses common approximate percentage bands and is for planning—always follow your syllabus for official grades.
- What if I leave a row blank?
- Rows with no weight (or weight 0) are ignored. Every category with a positive weight needs a valid numeric score so the average isn’t misleading.
- Is this weighted grade calculator free?
- Yes. It runs entirely in your browser with no signup and no server upload of your grades.
