What is a wind speed gauge
A wind speed gauge or meter is the device that measures the speed and sometimes the direction of the wind. These meters are also used to calculate the wind pressure. Typically when the air moves from one direction to others, it is called wind. In the weather stations, the wind speed gauge is mostly used to know the weather forecast.
There are mainly two types of wind speed gauge models: the analog model and the other one is the modern model. The first one is designed with four cups placed on top and they move anti-clockwise to show the direction and speed of the wind. However, in modern devices, you can digitally see the speed on the screen of the device.

It is the most crucial section of this article as you will find the factors you need to consider before choosing any wind speed gauge or meter (wikipedia). So please don't skip it.
Accuracy of information
The first thing you need to have in your wind speed measuring device is the accuracy of the information. If there is a slight problem in the accuracy of the measurement, it can ruin your whole work or for whatever you are using this device. So try to buy a meter that provides maximum accuracy to the readings.
You need a meter with durable construction, which can also serve you in rough weather conditions. The device you are using should not break in heavy windy conditions or lose its quality.
The smaller the size, the easier it is to carry. Most of the modern wind speed device comes in pocket size and they are relatively easy to carry. You should not purchase a larger device, which will create difficulties for you to take it on the go.
For a clearer view of the measurements, everyone prefers a colorful and clear LCD. Another thing to consider about the display is that it should also provide precise measurements in the low light so that you don't have to lose direction for low light.
The gap between updates
Frequent updates about the wind's direction and speed are vital when you are on the way towards somewhere. It is better if the device you are holding in your hand provides you updates regularly every 2.5 or 3 seconds.
Though I'm mentioning this factor, at last, it is quite important. Choose a meter that can run for quite a long time and serve you with accurate weather information.

How to read wind speed
You can read the wind speed in two ways: the conventional way through a wind barb and the digital wind speed measuring device.
- Digital wind speed meter: To read the wind speed is pretty easy with this digital device. Hold the device in your hand and face it off to the windy condition from where the wind is coming. You have to grab the device in the right direction for having an accurate reading. The LCD display of the device will show you the reading in an exact way.
- Wind barb: Instead of the digital formula, you can take a wind barb and conventionally read the wind speed. For this, you have to find out the direction of the wind. Place the barb at 0 degrees north and 180 degrees south position. You will understand from which direction the wind is coming by the movement of the flag on top.
- Then the flag will create four different types of knots to indicate the wind speed. The weather is calm when the round shape and the knot is less than 1.74. A single short line indicates a speed of 5 knots and a single long line suggests a speed of 10 knots. When there is a full triangle in the flag, it means the weather condition is rough and the wind speed is 50 knots.
So before arranging an outing, select a wind speed gauge or meter to have a nice trip. The device I've mentioned above will provide you with an accurate measurement of the weather condition through precise wind direction and speed.
